Why would a doctor prescribe SERM to me?
Your doctor may prescribe SERM to treat menopausal osteoporosis.
It is also used in estrogen positive breast cancer patients, to prevent recurrence. However, it may exacerbate vasomotor symptoms.
Common SERMs are Tamoxifen and Raloxifene
- Tamoxifen is taken by breast cancer survivors to reduce breast cancer recurrence. It helps to improve bone mineral density. However it may thicken the uterine endometrium lining and increasing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.
- Raloxifene (RLX) Hydrochloride (HCL) is an alternative to tamoxifen for the treatment of osteoporosis and prevention of recurrence among breast cancer survivors.
You may discuss further with your doctor regarding the best options for you.
