Can menopause happen at 25 or 38 years old?
- Yes, it can.
- When periods stop before the age of 40, it is called primary ovarian insufficiency (POI).
Why does POI happen?
- When there is cessation of ovarian function below the age of 40.
- It affects 1% of the female population.
- This could be due to an unknown cause, genetic predisposition, medical illness, chemotherapy or radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer, or surgical intervention.
